A Guide to Yellow Jackets: What You Need To Know

Yellow Jackets

Yellow jackets are insects belonging to the wasp family. Their appearance easily gets them mistaken for bees, and just like bees, they also sting. But is this something that we should be scared of? Are they dangerous, and should we be careful around them?

Here are some important facts and information about these insects, including what they look like, whether they pose a threat to us, and why you need a yellow jacket exterminator once you discover their nest on your property.

Appearance and Features

Yellow jackets have large antennae, bright yellow markings on the head, and bodies with black stripes and yellow bands. They are approximately 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch in length. Although bee-sized, you can distinguish them by their smooth and shiny appearance and pointed abdomens, whereas bees have round, fuzzy bodies.

Diet

These insects feed on food rich in sugar and protein, such as sweet drinks, fruits, and meat. This is why they are usually spotted in parks and picnic areas, where these types of food are brought and consumed. Garbage and compost piles also attract yellow jackets since they are sources of protein and sugar.

Active Period

They can be found outdoors at the end of summer and fall. July is when they start to become active, and then they get very active from August until November. These months are when their colony is at its peak and when they start running out of their natural food sources, so they forage outdoors.

Behavior

These are social insects and very territorial. A colony can get aggressive when threatened or if its nest is disturbed. This is when they sting and can do so multiple times. As such, they can be dangerous to people not just because their sting can be painful but also because, in rare cases, it can be fatal.

Signs of Infestation

Yellow jackets typically build their nests in tree cavities, in the ground, and in openings and voids in homes and places of business. It is quite common to discover a nest in the ground while mowing lawns, playing in the yard, or during outdoor picnics and gatherings.
